Training and Artist's Statement
My initial introduction to fine art began at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, where I was encouraged to paint abstractly by Elmer Bischoff.
I enrolled in the art department at UC Berkeley in the late 1950s under Bay Area figurative and abstract painters and teachers: John Haley, Karl Kasten, Glen Wessels, and Harold Paris. David Park was influential in the department at that time.
Later at San Francisco State University, I continued training in education and focused on the art of the child, with a master's thesis exploring the inner artist, expression and creativity. Certain coursework encouraged me to paint florals as an expressive experience, rather than as a botanical rendition.
I continued to take course work in the Art Department at CCSF and studio groups at CCSF Older Adults Education Program at Fort Mason and at San Francisco Park and Recreation/ Sharon Art Studio with a primary focus on figure drawing.
I am a member of the San Francisco Women Artist organization (www.sfwomenartists.org) and have had paintings "juried in" to the monthly exhibit.
